Essemtec Wins an NPI Award for the Cobra Placer

New Pick-and-Place Wins Coveted Award

The Cobra pick-and-place from Essemtec, the Swiss manufacturer of production systems for electronics, has been awarded an NPI Award for creative advancement in technology in the Component Placement ― Multifunction category. Its developers have been exploring new technical solutions and have now been decorated for their innovation.

“This NPI Award is a reward for our pioneering spirit,” says Essemtec's Marketing and Sales Manager Florian Schildein. He is pleased that the time was right for new ideas, materials and software solutions in pick-and-place technology. The engineers were looking for solutions outside the box and “the Award and customer orders show that we were right.” Schildein thanks all employees involved in the Cobra project and adds, “They deserve this award 100 percent.”

Linear motors, a real-time bus system and signal processing, carbon fibre parts, and a mineral cast base are only a few of the many technical highlights that make Cobra the most modern SMD pick-and-place system. Furthermore, the machine uses ePlace, the innovative software that makes operation of complex machines an easy and secure task.

Cobra is the first machine to combine the advantages of a highly flexible pick-and-place (240 intelligent feeders, changeover during operation) with the speed of an 8-axes placer (IPC-9850: 20,000 cph). It can pick four components simultaneously from different feeders. Every axis can handle all components from 01005 up to 100x150 mm.

Since 2008 a distinguished panel of industry experts has been awarding the finest examples of creative advancement in technology with the NPI Award program. Schildein is pleased with the 2011 award for the Cobra and the good sales figures since its introduction. He said, “The Cobra shows how a modern SMD pick-and-place must be today and in the future.“
